Casa Youth Shelter Diner Oct. 4 Posted Saturday, August 9, 2008 by Lion
SB Lions,
It's that time of year again. If you are interested in going to this year's Casa Youth Shelter Dinner and Auction. We need to know as soon as possible. The event is on Saturday, October 4. We have paid for 2 tables (20 people). Lions will have first choice. As usual, those who go are expected to spend at least $350.00 per couple. If you want to go, please be willing to make the commitment. Every year, we have people who sign up and then decide not to go and we rush around trying to find someone to fill the tables and they do this at the last minute. We also have others who would like to go that are turned away only to find out later that seats had been vacated and they could have gone. We want to have a wonderful evening. Please make your intentions known so we can make the decision soon. The seats will be announced at the first meeting in September. You can either e-mail me or Lion Pres. Ray.

Hopkinson School Carnival Posted Tuesday, May 27, 2008 by Lion
S. B. Lions,
This coming Friday, May 30 is the Hopkinson School Carnival. This is our last project of the year. Currently, we only have 3 volunteers to cook hamburgers and hot dogs. If you can help from 1:30-7:00 (includes loading and unloading ), it would be appreciated. Maybe some of you that haven't worked much this year could come out and help. We also need a truck to move the grill and others materials to the school. If you can help, please let me know as soon as possible. Thank you.

Convention news Posted Monday, May 19, 2008 by Lion
Hi All,
The District Convention is over and Seal Beach Host brought home the bacon. The results are out and we overwhelmed everyone. Lion Carol brought home the District Large Club Visitation Award. Lion Bruce brought home the award for the club with the most new members. And yes, we were overwhelmingly named the District 4-L4 Club of the Year! And Lion Gail and I were named District Secretary and President of the Year.
I want the thank all of the members who attended. We were faced with some adversity that was not our fault and I'm proud of the way the members in San Diego handled themselves. It only went to show the rest of the District why we are the BEST! I have a special thanks for Lion Kristine, Jacqui, Bill, and Blue Boy. The hospitality room was awesome! More people, including the police, came to our hospitality room than all of the other rooms put together.
I hope to see all of you at the meeting on Wednesday. If you can, try attending the Leos Charitable Giving Night tomorrow (Monday, May 19) night at the Methodist Church at 7:00pm.
AARRRGGGHHHH!

Rebuilding Together Long Beach project Posted Wednesday, April 9, 2008 by Lion
Fellow Lions,
The Rebuilding Together Long Beach project is coming soon!
On April 26th our club will be sponsoring one of the houses to be rebuilt and it would be great to have a bunch of volunteers from our club. Right now I have 5 people confirmed, that is not enough. Whether you're skilled or not there will be plenty of jobs to go around. It's also a great chance to learn a new skill.
Those of you who have participated before know what a worthwhile project this is. We have the awesome opportunity to really make a difference in someone's life, someone who may be put out of their home during one of the most vulnerable times in their life. It's the chance to do something really hands on instead of just sending a check.
You'll be fed breakfast & lunch and given a t-shirt to wear. We usually start around 6:30 in the morning and finish by 2pm or 3pm in the afternoon. If you can only work a portion of those hours, that's fine too. We'll take what we can get.
I'll have all of the info soon, so if you're interested please email me so I can add you to the list when I send out the pertinent info.
Yours in Lionism,
Lion Chris Langlais

If you golf, please register to play Posted Wednesday, April 9, 2008 by Lion
Fellow Lions,
If you golf, please register to play in our tournament. If you don't, ask a friend, co-worker, or neighbor to join in the fun on May 1st at our Annual Golf Tournament. Golfers, ask those who you play with to join you at the Naval Golf Course on May 1st. We need 100 golfers who want to have fun. There are only 4 tournaments that week so they should have time to play in ours. And ours is only $150.00. That includes golf, cart, dinner, and awards. The is going to be a great raffle also. What with the putting contest, the hole in one contest, closest to the pin, what more could you want? So let's get out and PROMOTE. This is our 2nd biggest fundraiser so let's make it a HIT!

LIONS CAMPAIGN SIGHT FIRST II Posted Sunday, January 20, 2008 by Lion
LIONS CAMPAIGN SIGHT FIRST II
Since 1990 the Lions of the world have provided services for preventable blindness to over 27 million people worldwide. Long known as the “Knights of the Blind”, Lions have been dedicated to eradicating preventable and curable blindness. Programs have been put in place worldwide towards that effort.
Currently the Lions have undertaken the largest fundraising effort in world history towards that end. Lions Campaign Sightfirst II has put a goal of raising $200 million before July 1, 2008. Those funds will be used for cataract surgeries, loss prevention clinics and building hospitals, distributing medication, and training medical personnel.
The challenge has been put forth for individual Lions and Lions Clubs to help raise the funds. They have been asked for personal donations and solicitations as well as for corporate and business donations. To date the organization has raised close to $130 million. The goal is within sight.
Most recently a challenge was given to the Lions of the world to reach for “The Power of 30”. It has been determined that the sight of 30 people can be saved with each donation of $180.00.
Additional facts include that every 30 seconds six people will go blind; less than 30 percent of the world’s blindness is incurable; so far the Lions have opened 30 WHO childhood blindness clinics around the world.
As the campaign reaches it’s conclusion in July of this year, Lions around the world will continue to work towards the goal of $200 million raised. It is comforting to know that all funds raised will go to the benefit of those less fortunate. Even as the campaign ends, Lions will continue their tireless efforts towards being “Knights of the Blind”.

To all Seal Beach Lions Posted Sunday, January 6, 2008 by Lion
This is a reminder that the next Lions meeting, Jan. 16, will be held at the Mary Wilson Library Senior Center. We will be having pizza and possibly spaghetti. The meeting will begin at 7:00pm. This is a program night. Let's have a good turn out as usual. The meeting after that, Feb. 6, will also be at the Senior Center. That is the Student Speaker Contest. With the contest title, "Immigration, My Solution", it should be a very interesting contest.

Ideas for using this new web program. Posted Thursday, June 12, 2003 by webmaster
Ideas for using this new web program.
Keeping us all up to date, that's the main idea. There's lots of ways of doing just that.
An Event chairperson could maintain a sign-up sheet. Replacing blank spots as people sign up.
Booth sign up as of 6/12/03
Sat. 6/7/03
9:00 -12:00 open
12:00 - 3:00 Lion Webmaster webmaster@sealbeachlions.com
3:00 - 6:00 Lion Herbert Groom secretary@sealbeachlions.com
Sun. 6/8/03
9:00 - 12:00 Well, you get the idea.
Next question is how would you let the chairperson know you want to sign up?
Look up at the top of this story, see where it says posted (date) by webmaster. That's an e-mail link. That link would go to the person who posted the item. I have already set up an account for Lion Secretary elect Herbert Groom. I also posted his last e-mail to all of us. I used this as an example to show both him and you what we can do with this.
It boils down to this. You can post informatioin, then go back and edit it, and then go back and edit it again, then remove it when it's old hat.
And you can only do this to the inforamtion you posted using the username and password I, webmaster@sealbeachlions.com will give to you if you ask for it.
NOTE: It does take a little knowlage of html to make email links but imagin this - the chairperson could eaily send an e-reminder to those on the list the day before.

Another glorious day of Lionism Posted Thursday, June 12, 2003 by Herbert Groom
Fellow Lions,
After a day of watching the robust stock market leap upward another 128 points it was off to the monthly Veterans Bingo night at the Long Beach Veterans Hospital to stand in for Lion President George Dooley. With my faithful companions, Lion Steve Jessee and Lion Chris Langlais we served up soda, cookies, nuts, pretzels, goldfish crackers and seedless grapes to 11 Veterans while enjoying several games of Bingo.
This was my fourth visit to the hospital. Each look in on these great soldiers/sailors for this wonderful nation is a rewarding experience. If you haven't done your own tour of duty to the V.A. hospital do so. The bond is heartening in that you're not going to find a more appreciative band of humanity. Each extraordinary individual on several occasions graciously thanked me for taking time out of my life to spend 90 to 120 minutes with them.
Departing the hospital parking lot I turned to Lion Chris, who was sitting in the passengers seat, and said, "...that was more enjoyable than spending an evening at the movies".
~~~~~~~~~
As a kid growing up on Cape Cod, 25 June was always a day to look forward to. "Black Christmas" we called it. For on this day, exactly six months from White Christmas, seasonal friends who had recently arrived just days before for their summer vacation from neighboring New England states, New York, New Jersey and points beyond would converge at Ballston Beach for a clambake glad in elf like attire. Oh those were the days! Boiled lobster, steamers (Pismo clams) with melted butter for dipping, corn-on-the-cob, Kale soup and a large bon-fire on the beach with a stereo hooked up to a car battery blaring rock and roll of the time, all while sporting a red pair of shorts, draped in gold/silver garland, and a Santa's cap.
Today, too, felt like Black Christmas in a way for visiting the "Lions Den" (post office box) there were yet again another stack of envelopes awaiting pick up. (Funny thing--the attendant at the UPS store informed me, one person actually walked their drawing request in thinking they could get a ticket to go.)
In Chinese custom the number nine is very significant. It signifies luck (similiar to the number seven for all you Vegas goers.)
Well, today there were twenty seven more requests for Opportunity Drawing tickets. So, like the stock market---we're on a tremendous upswing gang! That now makes 54 requests (nine on Saturday...eighteen on Tuesday) in a little more than four days.
I got the President of my company to buy a ticket, today, on behalf of the staff. His only request was that I give the 2 fish fry dinner ticket to someone living in the Seal Beach area. Therefore, I promptly gave it to a woman in Administration who lives in Long Beach.
Tomorrow two of my Traders will be buying tickets, too.
As demonstrated, it isn't that difficult to get these tickets sold--just ask the potential recipient if they want to serve the people in a surrounding community in a philanthropic manner.
Thanks for listening and I'll have more Opportunity Drawing updates for you again soon...
In the mean time, contact David Blasi via e-mail at davidblasi@adelphia.net or 562.598.2375. He'd be happy to coordinate getting several of the limited number of ducats out to you for distribution.
Secretary Elect, Lion Herb
